Dutch inflation rose sharply in May. According to a flash estimate from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), inflation reached 3.5 per cent in May, compared with 2.8 per cent in April. This is the highest monthly reading of the year and a clear acceleration after a relatively calm first quarter.

Energy prices rose 9.9 per cent year-on-year in May, an acceleration from the 7.9 per cent increase in April. More expensive services also contributed significantly to rising inflation, with prices in that segment up 4.7 per cent versus 3.6 per cent in April. Food, beverages and tobacco showed a cooling, from 1.5 to 0.4 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.1 per cent in May compared to April.

For investors and asset managers, this is a relevant signal: Dutch inflation is once again running above the ECB target of 2 per cent. The final CPI figures for May were scheduled for publication on 9 June.
